Inn at Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton named country’s best hotel

1329915793 83 Inn at Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton named countrys best hotel

At the Inn at Palmetto Bluff, 50 cottages are nestled among massive oaks along the picturesque south bank of the May River.

But it’s more than just scenic, according to Washington, D.C.-based U.S News & World Report. The monthly online news publication called it the best hotel in the country.

The Inn at Palmetto Bluff beat more than 1,500 four- and five-star hotels the publication considered for top honors in its 2012 rankings.

“We’re extremely proud and extremely grateful,” said general manager Marty Wall. “It’s always humbling to get this kind of recognition.”

The 22,000-acre community — about two-thirds the size of Hilton Head Island — also features private residences and several public amenities.

But its comfortable accommodations, diversity of activities and quickly growing reputation — it only opened in 2004 — helped the inn secure the top spot on this year’s list.

The publication computed a “hotel score” by weighing guest ratings on travel websites, the number of stars it receives in annual surveys and its additional awards and recognition.

Earlier this year, the inn was one of only four properties in South Carolina to receive a 2012 Five Diamond rating from AAA.

It also received the Forbes Travel Guide Four Star Award for 2012 and last year was named one of the 500 best hotels in the world by Travel and Leisure.

Hotel officials are committed to showcasing and promoting its distinct Lowcountry elements, executive assistant Christine Wrobel said.

It offers guests locally made drinks and honey, and produces its own mulberry-and-rice scrub used in its spa.

The sprawling property includes a 3-mile waterway for canoeing and kayaking, two tree houses, grass courts for bocce and croquet, and a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course.

The guest cottages — about 1,100 square feet each — feature Lowcountry artwork, antique pine floorboards and a screened-in porch.

The hotel is managed by Auberge Resorts, which oversees six exclusive facilities around the country.

It was one of three South Carolina hotels in the top 100 nationwide. The Wentworth Mansion in Charleston ranked third and the Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort placed 24th.

Wall said he’d already noticed an increase in calls from prospective guests since the list’s release earlier this week.

“The (award’s) outreach is huge,” he said. “Hopefully it will bring even more people to this unique and special place.”

City to consider union contract

1329914601 59 City to consider union contract

The city of Topeka’s governing body plans Tuesday to consider approving a three-year contract with Local 6406 of AFT Kansas, the union that represents city technical, fiscal, clerical, service and maintenance employees.

The city’s prior agreement with AFT Kansas — which applies to about 300 employees, including office assistants, equipment operators and engineering technicians — expired Dec. 31.

The proposed new contract includes pay increases totaling up to $694,500 through 2014. The raises would come from the contract’s stipulation for annual 1.4 percent cost-of-living adjustments and 1.5 percent step increases for employees who meet expectations on annual performance ratings.

The proposed contract also would require the city and union to negotiate costs for single-employee health coverage starting this year — a cost that until now came without a premium charge.

“I think it’s been pretty clear that employees will expect to pay for health care moving forward,” said Jacque Russell, human resources director for the city.

The city and county governing bodies will have full schedules in the coming week, with the Shawnee County Commission’s first meeting starting at 9 a.m. Monday in its chambers in Room B-11 of the county courthouse, 200 S.E. 7th.

The city council will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday in its chambers at 214 S.E. 8th, where it plans to:

■ Consider rezoning 1.01 acres of vacant land to allow for the construction of a hotel on the south side of S.W. Drury Lane about 700 feet west of S.W. Cheyenne Hills Road. The request was filed by Kansas Hospitality Inc. and recommended for approval Jan. 18 by the Topeka Planning Commission.

■ Consider a resolution introduced by Councilwoman Sylvia Ortiz that would exempt LKQ Industries at 5913 S.W. Topeka Blvd. from city annexation requirements to receive water and sewer service.

■ Hear a “second first reading” but not act on a proposal to raise city water, wastewater and stormwater utility rates. Interim city manager Dan Stanley said the city staff considers the second first reading necessary after an error was found in the proposal’s initial version, for which a first reading was held Feb. 7.

■ Consider a consent agenda that includes the city attorney’s office’s request that the council deny a $2,030.99 tort claim appeal filed by Angelina and Edmundo Gonzalez. The couple contend the city owes them money after a tree limb fell onto their car while it was parked Aug. 7 in front of their home in the 700 block of S.E. Branner. Consent agenda items generally are approved without debate.

Tuesday’s meeting will be preceded by a 5:15 p.m. work session in council chambers, where the council will discuss the proposed AFT Kansas agreement and the claim by the Gonzalezes.

On the county side, the solid waste department wants to buy truck chassis and bodies for its pending curbside recycling service — a purchase estimated to cost $2.24 million.

The department estimates the eight trucks it hopes to purchase for the service will cost $280,000 each. Funds will come out of the department’s 2012 budget.

Commissioners also plan Monday to consider:

■ A request from the public works department for authorization to solicit proposals for a locked-price diesel fuel contract for the rest of this year.

■ A corrections department request for authorization to solicit bids to remove and replace 480 security sprinkler heads within the Adult Detention Center addition and the Juvenile Detention Center — a cost director Richard Kline estimates to be about $32,000. The sprinkler heads are 14 years old.

■ The $32,000 purchase of fireworks for this year’s July 4 display, which will be performed by J & M Displays. The parks and recreation department is soliciting corporate sponsorship for the display.

■ An agreement to allow Quiznos to serve food and beverages at Lake Shawnee’s Bettis Family Sports Complex. The county would make $2,400 a year from the contract.

■ A public works department request seeking about $5,500 to buy a new pickup truck to replace one totaled in a Dec. 19 accident. The wreck occurred when an individual failed to yield the right-of-way to public works staff at S.W. Gary Ormsby Drive and Topeka Boulevard. That person’s insurance is to pay $21,973.93 of the $27,500 cost to buy the new pickup.

Great pet friendly destinations in Texas

1329911008 25 Great pet friendly destinations in Texas

If you’re looking for a relaxing weekend out of town, wanting to explore some of Texas’ most popular destinations, or craving some outdoor adventure, don’t worry about finding a kennel or a pet sitter for your dog.

Now it’s even easier for furry family members to come along, thanks to a large offering of dog-friendly hotels, restaurants, attractions, events and campgrounds across Texas, many of which are an easy drive from Abilene.

Many pet owners enjoy traveling with their pets because it is less expensive and there is no concern over leaving them at a kennel.

And, with options ranging from budget-friendly state parks and RV campgrounds to five-star hotels, there are plenty of dog-friendly travel choices within a four-hour drive from Abilene.

For example, Austin is one of the most dog-friendly cities, according to the website toptenz.net.

“Boasting 12 off-leash parks, Austin is a dream come true for both pet owners and the pets themselves,” according to the website, which ranks Austin as the No. 1 dog-friendly destination in the country. “Whether cooling off in the creek at Bull Creek District Park or taking a tour of the city in horse-drawn carriage, there are plenty of ways for your dog to enjoy themselves while in Austin. A large number of restaurants and stores welcome dogs, so be sure to take them out with you when you’re hitting the town …”

For instance, if a walking tour of Austin is your forte, take your dog along, too. The Congress Avenue and East 6th St. walking tour is a stroll along Austin’s streets with a historic flair, and if you get foot sore — or paw sore — hail a passing horse-drawn carriage for you and your four-legged friend. The Austin Carriage company allows dogs (on leashes) to ride.

Among the myriad dog-friendly attractions in Austin is Zilker Botanical Garden, a 30-plus acre garden-lover’s dream on the south bank of the Colorado River with roses, herbs, Japanese gardens, streams, butterflies, waterfalls and koi-filled ponds. Dogs are welcome on leashes, and of course, there’s the “if your pet poops, you must scoop” rule.

Farther south on I-35 is San Antonio where many of the city’s most famous attractions are dog friendly. Take your dog for a leashed stroll in front of the Alamo or along the Riverwalk, where many restaurants allow dogs to dine with their owners in patio seating facing the river. A tip: Call ahead to make sure there is a dog-friendly table available. Many restaurants have a limited number of designated, dog-friendly areas.

“Unfortunately, every establishment on the Riverwalk has its own pet policy, so there really isn’t one rule,” said Marcia Hernandez, communications director of the Paseo del Rio Association. “The Riverwalk, as a public park, is pet-friendly, and leashed pets are always welcome.”

Many major budget hotel chains such as La Quinta and Motel 6 allow pets, or, if you’re feeling a bit rich, you and your dog may want to stay at an upscale hotel. For instance, at The Emily Morgan Hotel, a historic property located just steps from the Alamo, guests are given a list of local restaurants and other attractions that allow dogs. There have also been reports of ghost sightings at The Emily Morgan, so maybe your dog will alert you to any such goings-on.

A tip: Many hotels charge a nonrefundable pet fee, so it’s best to check the property’s policy before making reservations.

And, if you love roller coasters and Shamu, then you can visit Six Flags Fiesta Texas or Sea World in San Antonio. Both theme parks offer on-site kennels where you can visit your dog throughout the day as you play.

But, if you and your dog are more nature-lovers than city-lovers, there are many options, including privately owned campgrounds and RV parks such as Hidden Valley RV Park in Von Ormy, southwest of San Antonio.

Park operator Teri Blaschke said her guests and their dogs can enjoy walking trails and fishing at private Medio Creek on the property.

Blaschke, who is a dog lover herself, said traveling in an RV is a great way for many of her guests to enjoy traveling, many of whom are snowbirds who come south to escape the winter months up north.

“I would say that 90 percent of the travelers in RVs travel with their pets,” Blaschke said. “That seems to be a main reason to choose an RV lifestyle.

“I don’t often travel anywhere, but when I do, I have an RV and I do bring my dogs (because) it would be like leaving your kid, and I can’t imagine doing it,” said Blaschke of her dogs Louie and Dottie.

State parks are also an option for dog lovers, including local favorite Abilene State Park (16 miles southwest of town near Tuscola) as well as the state parks in San Angelo (on the shores of Lake O.C. Fisher) and at Lake Brownwood (16 miles northwest of Brownwood.)

All state parks have regulations which require that dogs be on a six-foot or shorter leash and be attended at all times. (Dogs are not allowed in buildings at the state parks, so you’ll need to plan on tent camping or staying in an RV, but the advantage to taking your dog to a state park is that there is no additional pet fee or deposit.)

At Abilene State Park, you and your pooch can enjoy observing wildlife on the natural trails — if your dog can be stealthy — such as white-tailed deer, raccoon, armadillo, fox, squirrel, cottontail rabbit and a variety of birds.

At Lake Brownwood State Park, park superintendent John Holland said campers and picnickers are more than welcome to bring their dogs as long as they follow the rules.

“They can go everywhere (within the park) except the actual swim beach,” he explained. “The pet needs to be with them at all times. (Owners) can’t go off and just leave (their dog) tied up or in a pen while they’ve gone somewhere else.”

And, at San Angelo State Park, dog lovers can join with others who enjoy the park’s hiking and walking trails and equestrian areas. The park even has camping facilities for visitors who want to bring their horses, said Kurt Kemp, park superintendent.

“People bring their horses and their dogs and their own families, and I’ve even had campers bring their cats with them,” Kemp said, adding that the park prides itself on being pet-friendly.

The park also hosts an annual fundraising event for the park that’s catered to dog lovers: The Weiner Dog Races are held each spring during the Dog’s Day at the Park event. The park also features the state’s official 100-head longhorn herd for visitors to observe, and local kennel clubs have offered canine educational programs at the park throughout the year, Kemp added.

It is only a driving distance away from the important places. Comparison is the other option to find best hotel deal. A small number people probably don't have the time or interest in an accommodation that blots out a property for an accommodation. The Marlborough Sounds region has some delightful, refurbished buildings which make for a romantic getaway ?not to mention the incredible wine on offer. Taj Rambagh Palace - Part of the Taj chain of hotels, this exclusive 5-star hotel was once a royal palace for the Indian royal family. Most of us have the desire to stay in a luxury hotel to experience comfort, tranquility and elegance. I actually feel a lot of the benefits to hotel motels aren't under emphasized. They were oriented toward hotel best rates. However, there are many suburbs in the central and western part of Christchurch that seem untouched from the effects of the earthquake and are operating under normal conditions. I targeted their sweet spots. In my research, these are the fun facts touching on great deals on hotels. For hundreds of years, London has been the destination of choice for the world's tourist trade. From whence do compadres spot desirable accommodation sessions? Offer numerous options suiting your preferences and budget.

Changes to PGA Tour pick up steam, appear likely

1329909787 29 Changes to PGA Tour pick up steam, appear likely

No one is quick to embrace change until money is involved.

That’s one reason the Players Advisory Council gave its blessing last week to the concept of the Nationwide Tour being the primary path to the big leagues, PGA Tour cards being awarded in a three-tournament series and a new season starting in October instead of January.

It now goes to the policy board March 27.

The details, however, remain very much under discussion.

The changes seemingly would make the developmental tour attractive to a new title sponsor and make the fall tournaments relevant by including them in the FedEx Cup season. That equates to as much as $24.3 million in prize money.

“We’d be the first professional sport to vote down money,” said Joe Ogilvie, part of the 16-member PAC. “That’s what we would be doing if we voted it down. When you put it in those terms, a lot of guys went from, ‘We shouldn’t do this’ to ‘You kind of have to.’”

UA women win

The University of Arizona women’s golf team picked up its second consecuitve tournament win with a 19-stroke victory at the UNLV Invitational on Tuesday. The three-round, two-day event was held at the Cascata Golf Club.

Senior Isabelle Boineau and freshman Manon Gidali shared first place with scores of 218 (2 over).

“I’m very proud of our team,” Arizona head coach Laura Ianello said.

“It’s rare to have all of your players in the top 10 and to have two as co-medalists. It was a pretty special week for us.”

No. 17 Arizona won the team title with rounds of 289, 294 and 289 for a total of 872 (8 over). The Wildcats placed three golfers in the top four and all five players in the top eight. The hosting Rebels finished second (891).

Senior Margarita Ramos earned a fourth-place finish (5 over), senior Nikki Koller finished in a three-way tie for fifth (6 over), and freshman Andrea Vilarasau (7 over) tied for eighth.

Colangelo’s Classic

The 11th annual Jerry Colangelo Sports Legends Golf Classic is set to be held at the Arizona Biltmore Resort and Golf Club in Phoenix on April 15-16.

The event, to help raise funds for “The Drive For Prostate Health” through Prostate On-Site Projects, will feature Hall of Famers from the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL as Celebrity Team Captains.

Dana Tanamachi is a graphic designer and custom chalk letterer who hails from the Lone Star State, but now resides in Brooklyn, New York. Currently, she works at Louise Fili Ltd, a NYC-based studio specializing in logo, package, restaurant, and book design. Q. How long have you been making your custom chalk creations?

A. I’ve been creating large scale chalk installations since November 2009, so just over a year and a half.

Q. What do you love about your medium (or regret)?

A. Recently, I’ve collaborated with clients such as Google, Adidas, West Elm, Every Day with Rachael Ray magazine, and The Ace Hotel New York.

Q. Tell us about your day job…

A. I work at a small boutique design studio called Louise Fili Ltd. We specialize in high-end food packaging and restaurant design. My job is a mix of production, design, PR, and administration for the studio—since we’re small, we all wear many hats!

Q. And where did you study?

A. I studied Communication Design at the University of North Texas— a school primarily known for its art and Jazz programs. art.unt.edu/

Jirongo met touts, boda boda operators, taxi drivers and traders in different hotels in the town to induce them to attend a URP rally this Sunday at Muliro Gardens. He had earlier handed out cash at Tingiza hotel, Jamindas Motel and Kakamega Social Hall. Reached for comment, Jirongo denied that no one foughtover cash terming the reports propaganda. Budget Hotels Although budget hotels in Delhi are peppered all over the city, the Paharganj area seems to be the topping the charts for its popularity as home to abundant cheap hotels. How wonderful. I passionately disapprove of that opinion. DongFang Hotel- The Dongfang Hotel is located in downtown Guangzhou, a two minute walk to the metro and less than 30 minutes drive from the airport. In addition to offering many options of cheap accommodation it also offers several sightseeing attractions and places of interest. Millions of Americans visit online dating websites every year, hoping to find a companion or even a soul mate.

But today, on Valentine’s Day, we want to warn you thatcriminals use these sites, too, looking to turn the lonely andvulnerable into fast money through a variety of scams.

These criminals—who also troll social media sites and chat roomsin search of romantic victims—usually claim to be Americanstraveling or working abroad. In reality, they often live overseas.Their most common targets are women over 40 who are divorced, widowed, and/or disabled, but every age group and demographic is atrisk.

Here’s how the scam usually works. You’re contacted online bysomeone who appears interested in you. He or she may have a profileyou can read or a picture that is e-mailed to you. For weeks, evenmonths, you may chat back and forth with one another, forming aconnection. You may even be sent flowers or other gifts. Butultimately, it’s going to happen—your new-found “friend” is goingto ask you for money.

So you send money…but rest assured the requests won’t stopthere. There will be more hardships that only you can helpalleviate with your financial gifts. He may also send you checks tocash since he’s out of the country and can’t cash them himself, orhe may ask you to forward him a package.

So what really happened? You were targeted by criminals, probably based on personal information you uploaded on dating orsocial media sites. The pictures you were sent were most likelyphony, lifted from other websites. The profiles were fake as well, carefully crafted to match your interests.

In addition to losing your money to someone who had no intentionof ever visiting you, you may also have unknowingly taken part in amoney laundering scheme by cashing phony checks and sending themoney overseas and by shipping stolen merchandise (the forwardedpackage).

While the FBI and other federal partners work some of thesecases—in particular those with a large number of victims or largedollar losses and/or those involving organized criminal groups—manyare investigated by local and state authorities.

We strongly recommend, however, that if you think you’ve beenvictimized by a dating scam or any other online scam, file acomplaint with our Internet Crime Complaint Center. Beforeforwarding the complaints to the appropriate agencies, IC3 collatesand analyzes the data—looking for common threads that could linkcomplaints together and help identify the culprits. Which helpskeep everyone safer on the Internet.

Awareness is the best tool for preventing crime…and in thiscase, even from preventing a broken heart.
